About

MIRAAS was born from a simple idea:

Culture is meant to grow with us.

We are a Calgary-based platform celebrating the
culture we are building in the diaspora.

We’re interested in the old, the new, and everything in between — especially the creative stuff.

Through film, art, music, events & community, MIRAAS brings people together to connect with where we come from, celebrate where we are and create what comes next.

We love where we come from; But we also know that culture is constantly changing. And honestly? That’s the point.

We don’t believe culture needs to be put in a glass box and recreated exactly as it was. The diaspora is creating its own version of South Asian culture every day. And it’s shaped by where we live, what we experience, who we are, and what we dream up next.

We want to carry forward the good stuff — the art, music, stories, food, fashion, humour, creativity, community and all the little things that make us feel connected — while making room for new ideas, new voices and new ways of doing things.

Because culture can honour its roots
without being stuck in them.

We want to see filmmakers telling unexpected stories, DJs reimagining familiar sounds, artists turning memories into something new, and creatives pushing culture in directions we haven’t seen before.

Through film, art, music, events and community, MIRAAS brings people together to connect with where we come from, celebrate where we are, and create what comes next.

And whether you grew up surrounded by South Asian culture, are reconnecting with it, or are simply curious to learn more. There’s room for you here.

We’re not here to recreate the past.
We’re here to build what comes next.

Welcome to MIRAAS.

Culture we inherit.
Culture we create.
Culture we reimagine.

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, MIRAAS acknowledges that we gather, create and celebrate on the traditional territories of the people of Treaty 7. This includes the Blackfoot Confederacy — the Siksika, Piikani and Kainai First Nations — as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation and the Stoney Nakoda Nations, including the Chiniki, Bearspaw and Goodstoney First Nations. We also recognize that Calgary is home to Otipemisiwak Métis Government Districts 5 and 6. MIRAAS is committed to learning from the histories of these lands and to creating space for connection, creativity and community with respect and reciprocity.
